Small Droplets, Big Chemistry: Reactivity at Water and Organic Interfaces
Microdroplet interfaces can produce reactive oxidants (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals) even without sunlight. This raises a key question: could interfacial chemistry drive a previously overlooked route to particle aging, especially at night?
This talk examines oxidant formation and organic transformation in microdroplets, focusing on how droplet size, humidity, oxygen, and ion–organic interactions regulate these processes. Mechanisms such as interfacial electric fields, partial solvation, and charge transfer are discussed with supporting evidence.
It also assesses whether interfacial oxidants cause meaningful transformation under realistic atmospheric conditions, and identifies what evidence is needed to quantify and model this "dark" chemistry pathway.
